How to Send a Long Recital Video to Grandparents From iPhone

Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer: if the grandparents use an iPhone or iPad, put the video in an iCloud Shared Album. It plays in their Photos app with nothing to download. For Android or email, compress the video to fit first (about 18 MB for Gmail), or send a link if it’s longer than a few minutes.

Why recital videos are hard to send

A school concert or recital is often 5–20 minutes long. At the iPhone’s default 1080p setting that’s roughly 300 MB to over a gigabyte, far beyond what email (20–25 MB) or a basic text message will carry. The video either refuses to send or gets crushed into something blurry.

Option 1: Shared Album (best for iPhone and iPad grandparents)

  1. Open Photos › Albums › + › New Shared Album.
  2. Name it (“Recitals”) and add the grandparents’ Apple ID emails or phone numbers.
  3. Add the video. They get a notification, and it shows up under Shared Albums in their Photos app.

It’s free, doesn’t use your iCloud storage, and every future video goes to the same place, so they never have to hunt through messages. Shared albums store a reduced-resolution copy, which still looks good on a phone or iPad.

Option 2: Text it (Android or iPhone)

  • To an iPhone (blue bubble): iMessage sends long videos but compresses them on the way.
  • To Android: check whether the conversation shows RCS or Text Message under the name. Over RCS, files up to about 105 MB go through in decent quality. Over old SMS/MMS, videos are limited to around 5 MB and arrive blurry, so compress or trim before sending.

Option 3: Email it

Gmail stops at 25 MB and Outlook at around 20 MB, and attachments grow by about a third when they’re sent. Compress to around 18 MB for Gmail or 14 MB for Outlook. At those sizes a 2–3 minute clip still looks good at 720p. If you use Apple’s Mail app, Mail Drop sends the full-size file as a download link instead. Our email compression guide has the details.

Option 4: Send just the highlight

Grandparents mostly want their grandkid’s part. In Photos, tap Edit, drag the yellow handles to that moment, and choose Save Video as New Clip. A 90-second highlight is easy to send any way above, and more likely to be watched more than once.

Which should you pick?

Grandparents have… Best option
iPhone or iPad Shared Album
Android phone RCS text, or trim and compress first
Mostly use email Compress to ~18 MB, or Mail Drop
Any device, very long video Share a link (iCloud, Google Drive)

Frequently asked questions

Why did my video arrive blurry on Grandma's Android phone?

If the message went as old-style MMS (a green bubble without RCS), videos are squeezed to a few megabytes, so they arrive tiny and blocky. Newer iPhones and Android phones use RCS, which allows files up to about 105 MB per message.

What's easiest for grandparents who aren't techy?

If they have an iPhone or iPad, a Shared Album: videos appear in their Photos app automatically and they just tap to play. If they don't, a compressed video in a text or an email is the simplest thing to open.
